Rozelaar ## Castle

Rozelaar Castle

A Historic Landmark in Lochristi

The castle domain, approximately 25 hectares in size, is located near the center of Lochristi.

The domain includes the castle with its various outbuildings, avenues, farmlands, and vineyard.

The current castle was designed by the Ghent architect Minard in the early 18th century, incorporating stables and two orangeries from the former moated castle. Only two medieval entrance towers remain from the old structure.
The white neoclassical castle is visible from the monumental Castle Avenue but is not open to the public.

The history of Rozelaar Castle

The Rozelaar Castle domain played a significant role in Lochristi’s history. The original Roselaer estate was established by the Saint Bavo Abbey in Ghent, where the original castle served as a residence for abbots. The moated castle was partially destroyed several times and ultimately demolished in the early 19th century.

On the current castle site, Prince-Bishop Ferdinand von Lobkowitz built stables and two orangeries, later integrated into the current castle.

History with a Story

In 1857, Charles Vuylsteke started a horticultural business on the estate, sparking an industry that transformed Lochristi into a renowned hub for floriculture.

A New Future for Rozelaar

In 1995, the Rozelaar Castle was designated as a protected monument.

Between 2009 and 2025, the castle underwent extensive restoration under architect Stéphane Boens.

The castle serves a private purpose, but its farm is available for high-end events.
